First Unitarian Church of Alton: Organizational Accountability
In order to accomplish the ministry of this congregation, the Board and Minister take responsibility for accountability of specific programs. Below explains how the ministries are defined and maintained by either the Board or Minister.
Minister
Administration– Office, bookkeeping, maintenance of files, communications, and all practical office related tasks of the ministry of the church. Includes the Administrator/Bookkeeper, church communications, maintenance of documentation for the U.U.A., and connecting visitors and the greater community to appropriate staff/volunteers within the church.
Administrator– Manages and maintains the Church Office, responds to or forwards inquiries from the public, sends weekly and monthly church communications, and other duties as assigned.
Bookkeeper– Maintains the church books, provides information to Board, Minister, and Finance Team about church finances, handles church payroll, pays bills and contractors, as needed.
Communications– Includes the Monthly Newsletter Editor, administrators of Facebook and other online social media, web site creation and maintenance, and announcements within the church and to the greater community.
Pastoral Care– Includes pastoral care provided by the Minister, staff, and Pastoral Associates committed to supporting members in times of need, meals and potlucks provided for rites of passage (weddings, funerals, etc.) and recovery from illness, and all support provided to members and friends in times of crisis.
Religious Education Council– Our life-span Religious Education Program is an all-volunteer program with staff support, as needed from the minister. To minimize burn-out and maximize our resources, we currently employ an R. E. Council model. The Council is made up of portfolio holders who commit to volunteer for one year. The Council meets, as needed, to implement the R. E. programs and to brainstorm solutions to everyday problems. They support the work of ongoing Religious Education policies including safety policy. The Council is coordinated by the R. E. Council Chair with input, as needed from the minister.
Nursery/Spirit Play Portfolio– locates and schedules volunteers and assists with logistics of implementing both programs.
Elementary Portfolio– works with R.E. Council Chair to determine annual curriculum. Locates and schedules volunteers for and assists with logistics of implementing the Elementary R. E. curriculum.
Youth Portfolio– locates and schedules volunteer Youth Advisors and assists with logistics. Supports youth in developing their own program within the expectations of the tasks of the youth program (six areas).
Adult Portfolio– supports volunteers interested in teaching adult programs including those programs already established.
Administrative Portfolio– conducts background checks, maintains R. E. supplies, and maintains information data base on R. E. participants.
Social Action– Includes social justice and service programming and events.
Social Justice– Includes programming that strives toward a just and sustainable society.
Social Service– Includes programming and events that provide services to those struggling to get by such as 4th Saturday and hosting a family for Christmas through Oasis.
Worship– Includes creation and implementation of all worship services on Sunday, special holidays, and for rites of passage (weddings, child dedications, memorial services).
Worship Associates– These lay leaders work closely with the minister to offer consistent, professional, and meaningful services.
Accompanist– Provides piano accompaniment for hymns and additional music for the service, as needed.
