The two Sunday Worship Services at the First Unitarian Church in Alton begin at 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. (During the summer months of June, July, and August, only one service is held at 10:30 a.m.) For a listing of each month’s sermon topics and guest speakers, please see our church newsletter.
The sources of inspiration for our Worship Services come from Judeo- Christian writings, Buddhist teachings, the practices of other world religions, humanist philosophies, and earth-centered traditions.
Our Services include music and singing, readings of prose or poetry, the sharing of personal joys and concerns, a quiet time for meditation, and sermons to enliven, educate, energize, encourage, and inspire.
At the 11:00 a.m. Worship Service, children are invited to go into the church sanctuary with their families and participate in the opening part of the service, which includes a children’s focus time. Following this short period the children are excused to their Religious Education (Sunday School) classes for the remainder of the hour. On the first Sunday of each month, instead of going into the sanctuary with their parents, children aged three and older gather together in another room for a “children’s chapel” with songs and a story before going to their classes.
During the 9:30 a.m. service, supervised, unstructured activities will be provided in one of the Religious Education classrooms for children in 1st through 3rd grades.
Nursery care is provided for infants and young children during both Worship Services.
A fellowship time follows each Worship Service, with everyone invited to stay for light refreshments and conversation. Potluck lunches are held after church on the fourth Sunday of each month.
